The boys and girls tournaments both have very different feels to them. The boys have a clear cut favorite in Collegiate, while the girls is as wide open as a tournament can be.
Collegiate has only lost one game in the last two years, and this stellar senior class should win and win easily in the 3A State Tournament. The Spartans dismantled the KBCA's second ranked team Douglass 77-54 in the Sub-State final to send a very clear message to the rest of 3A.
On the girls side, the KBCA's top three (Southwestern Heights, Rock Creek and Wichita Collegiate) all were eliminated in their respective sub-states, so who is the favorite?
I think it has to be Thomas More Prep, the one seed, or Garden Plain. TMP beat top-ranked Southwestern Heights in the championship game of the Lakin Sub-State 51-47. Garden Plain won with ease over Collegiate in the Conway Springs Sub-State 52-40.
TMP and Garden Plain are on the same side of the bracket, but they are clearly the two hottest teams right now riding a lot of confidence.

Collegiate should win. They pay good atheletes to come to their school. Don't deny it either.
Hard for the town teams to compete
with what amounts to a JuCo team.
To bad for Douglass...they deserve to be in the state tournament.
I was looking forward to seeing Douglass in the state tournament. KSHSAA should step up and deal with private schools. What are these young Collegiate athletes getting out of trouncing their opponents. Certainly not humility. I am sure the Douglass athletes have gained experience from playing Collegiate.
Interesting contrast. In a state where University of Kansas basketball typically offers the best in the nation, still the locals launch the old whimpering about a strong program.
I suppose most of these crtics are from Douglas. Unless Collegiate is using 18-20 yr olds, I say tell your boys to step up. It's 16yr old versus 16 yr olds.
I live in a border community and watch our AD keep looking for softer competition and weaker leagues in hopes of finding someone they can consistently beat.
All it does is invite the boys to show less dedication and commitment to becoming competitive. Happens all pver the state. No wonder KU rarely recruits heavily within the state.
The operative word in competitive varsity sports is COMPETITIVE. Stop whining and tell yourf kids to work to get better in the off season. They can't wait for parents to whine and make winning easier for them.
Teach your boys what it means to be men in a competitive world. Unless you plan to launch the same argument when they [;ace their resumes up against the Ivy League grads.
I'm from a Class 5A (public) school, so I have no connection to Douglass, Collegiate or any other team from the MCAA. However, I think it's unfair that Collegiate recruits and many of its athletes have club memberships, personal trainers, etc. Collegiate should play other private schools instead of romping on what amounts to an uneven playing field. Collegiate likes to run up the score and has no class.
